Sobicoat®

Enteric-Coated Sodium Bicarbonate

Sobicoat® is a first-of-its-kind enteric-coated sodium bicarbonate formulation indicated in the management of metabolic acidosis associated with chronic kidney disease. The enteric coating gives clinicians an edge over conventional sodium-bicarbonate tablets and may also help delay the progression of CKD.

Indication

Sobicoat® is indicated in the management of metabolic acidosis associated with chronic kidney disease, in the normalisation of systemic, gastric and urinary alkali levels, and as replacement therapy in severe diarrhoea with substantial GI bicarbonate loss. Sodium bicarbonate is also used to increase urinary pH to enhance the solubility of certain weak acids (e.g., cystine, sulfonamides, uric acid), in haemolytic reactions requiring urinary alkalinisation, and as add-on therapy in hyperkalaemia to induce cellular uptake of potassium.

Mechanism of action

Sodium bicarbonate replenishes circulating bicarbonate, correcting metabolic acidosis and supporting acid-base homeostasis. The enteric coating of Sobicoat® is the differentiator - it may prevent dose-dumping in the stomach, improving GI tolerance and reducing the belching, bloating and other side effects commonly seen with conventional sodium-bicarbonate tablets in CKD patients.

Notes for patients & caregivers

Take whole - do not crush or chew. The enteric coating is what protects you from the stomach upset usually seen with sodium bicarbonate. Follow the schedule your nephrologist gives you.

These notes are for general awareness only and are not a substitute for medical advice. Please follow your treating physician's instructions and the directions on the dispensed product.

Storage

Store below 25°C. Keep tightly closed and protected from moisture.
