Indication
Sobicoat®-DS is indicated in the management of metabolic acidosis associated with chronic kidney disease, in the normalisation of systemic, gastric and urinary alkali levels, and as replacement therapy in severe diarrhoea with substantial GI bicarbonate loss - at the higher daily bicarbonate doses commonly required in advanced CKD. Also used to increase urinary pH, in haemolytic reactions requiring urinary alkalinisation, and as add-on therapy in hyperkalaemia.
Mechanism of action
As for Sobicoat® - sodium bicarbonate replenishes circulating bicarbonate, correcting metabolic acidosis. The double-strength tablet halves the pill count for patients on substantial daily bicarbonate requirements. The enteric coating prevents dose-dumping in the stomach, improving GI tolerance versus conventional sodium-bicarbonate tablets.

Each enteric-coated Sobicoat®-DS tablet contains Sodium Bicarbonate U.S.P. 1000 mg.

Blister pack of 10 tablets in one strip, 10 strips in a box.
For Healthcare Professionals
Use when total daily sodium-bicarbonate requirement is high enough that the 500 mg Sobicoat® tablet count becomes burdensome. Cumulative daily dose may extend to 16 g in selected conditions. Monitor serum bicarbonate, sodium and blood pressure during therapy.

Notes for patients & caregivers
Take whole - do not crush or chew. The enteric coating is what protects you from the stomach upset usually seen with sodium bicarbonate. Follow the schedule your nephrologist gives you.
